Magnetic Pick Up Tools: What Are They? How Do They Work?

Sep. 01, 2021

You should have seen the long bar-shaped objects that workers hold in their hands to pick up tiny parts in the auto store, what are they? How do they work? Are there different classifications? These questions are answered by AUTOTOOLS DEPOT, an automotive hand tool supplier.

What do they do?

Magnetic pick-up tools are used to retrieve objects in hard-to-reach areas (such as the bottom of a car engine). Since the object being retrieved is usually a ferromagnetic material, the pickup tool has a magnet on the end to attract the object. Depending on the strength of the magnet in the pickup tool, it can be used to retrieve a variety of objects, from simple nuts and bolts to heavier tools (such as pliers).

Larger picking tools can also be used to pick up multiple objects at once. This can be useful if you need to pick up a large number of screws or nails from the ground to avoid injury or damage.

The end of the collection tool has a powerful neodymium magnet that attracts ferromagnetic materials to the tool.

What is a neodymium magnet?

A neodymium magnet contains neodymium, iron and boron, as well as some other elements. It is the strongest type of magnet commercially available. Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets were opened to the public in 1984 after being developed several years earlier.

They are the strongest permanent magnets available. Even very small NdFeB magnets have great magnetic strength and are capable of lifting more than 1000 times their own weight. They have high resistance to demagnetization and even the smallest neodymium magnets have high energy. Their price is very low.

However, neodymium magnets are very corrosive and must be handled with care. To help achieve this, they are coated for maximum efficiency.

What are the different types?

Telescopic Picking Tool

A telescopic pick up tool is a telescopic extension of the joint. It has a magnetic end that holds magnetic material and can also come with a cushioned rubber handle.

A bendable picking tool, as described, usually has a fixed length, but is flexible to be bent into different positions. Some bendable pickup tools are flexible from the handle to the end of the magnet, while others are only partially flexible.

Claw Pickup Tools

Claw pickup tools have a spring mechanism on the end of the claw to open and close the claw, allowing it to pick up non-magnetic materials. Some claw pickup tools also have magnetic centers.

Hinge Joint Picking Tools.

Hinge joint picking tools have a telescoping shaft with a double hinge joint to which a magnet is attached. This allows the magnet to rotate 360 degrees.

How do I choose?

The picking tool needed depends greatly on the task required. Mechanics often use pickup tools to pick up small objects from the engine. Foldable pickup tools are more useful for this task, as they can be bent around engine parts.

Picking tools with lights and mirrors are also very useful when using the engine to help see into dark spaces or around objects.

Telescopic pickup tools are longer than bendable pickup tools, so if you need to use the tool for long-range tasks, such as removing objects from a drain, it may be more appropriate to use a telescopic pickup tool.

When you need to pick up non-magnetic materials, a claw pickup tool is preferable to a magnetic tool. However, the claw tool also has magnets that allow it to pick up both magnetic and non-magnetic materials, making it a more versatile tool.
